Bayeux Travel & Hotels

Travel Information

Bayeux is situated in a convenient position to the north-west of Caen with good access to much of the Lower Normandy coast and to major traffic routes and population centres.

Bayeux by Road

The N13 is the principal traffic artery for the area. It bypasses Bayeux, but a network of minor roads leads out of the town to access it.

  • the N13 motorway to the east
This route is the direct connection to the regional capital of Caen. It skirts Bayeux to the south and carries on to the west.
  • the N13 to the west
This continuation of the main road carries on to Carentan and the peninsula to the north (so is the easiest access to and from Cherbourg).
  • minor roads to the north
There is a variety of local roads which lead in the direction of the coast. Of most interest are likely to be the D516 towards Arromanches and the beaches to the east and the D6 towards Port-en-Bessin and beaches to the west
  • minor roads to the south
The D572 heads off to the southwest in the direction of Saint-Lô while the D6 south is probably the most direct route towards the east-west A84 motorway between Caen and Avranches.

Bus Verts de Calvados provide regional bus services.

Bayeux by Rail

Bayeux railway station is located on the southern edge of the town. It has two main connections to regional centres:

  • Cherbourg - Bayeux - Caen - Lisieux - Paris St Lazare
  • Caen - Bayeux - Saint-Lô - Granville - Rennes

Bayeux by Air

There are several local airports which could serve the visitor to Bayeux unfortunately with a limited range of scheduled services:

  • Caen Carpiquet offers some flights within Europe but most of the regular services operate between French cities
  • Deauville-Normandie airport between Trouville and Honfleur offers flights to London City Airport
  • Cherbourg-Maupertus Airport is worth checking for any scheduled flights introduced for the current season

One of the Paris airports is likely to provide the best flight selection. With the good road and public transport connections, there is not a problem travelling to Normandy. Paris - Charles de Gaulle Airport is the main international airport located 290km from Bayeux.

Bayeux by Ferry

The closest ferry service to Bayeux is at Caen-Ouistreham (ca. 40km), with regular services to Portsmouth provided by Britanny Ferries.

Other cross-Channel ferry ports to choose from are Cherbourg (94km), with services to Poole or Portsmouth from Britanny Ferries or Condor Ferries and Le Havre (128km) with services to Portsmouth from LD Lines.
